Toolkit

Magical Millie Toolkit

This toolkit is intended to help support community and family conversations about wellness and community care, including messaging that immunizations help protect people we love.

About the Guide

Urban Indian Health Institute (UIHI) launched a national public health campaign based on the self-published children’s coloring book, Magical Millie’s Courageous Journey, to address the need for AI/AN-attuned storytelling to engage families in public health education. The project uses joy, humor, and community relationships to make conversations about immunization approachable and meaningful.

The story centers on the conversations a magical unicorn named Millie has with her relatives. Horses are sacred and have deep cultural meaning as helpers for many Native people. As recognized healers, horse medicine creates connections and facilitates wellness. Horses remain sacred to many AI/AN communities today, continuing to play an important role in cultural and ceremonial practices. Including these elements in Magical Millie connects the book’s themes of courage, care, and protection to longstanding cultural teachings.

Data show us that immunizations are safe and effective across all ages, but mistrust and misinformation can create barriers and hesitancy. UIHI will continue to develop and update materials to support families in discussing immunization through community attuned messages centered on a culture of care.

What you can do

Within this toolkit, you will find sample content and messaging around immunization to use in your communications and outreach efforts. This messaging is intended to act as a guide, but we encourage you to make it your own. Feel free to copy and paste the content and tailor it to best fit your target audiences.

UIOs, Tribal organizations, and Native-led non-profits can request Magical Millie resources and products to support outreach efforts using our Product Request Form below.
