Immunizations

Learn more about immunizations and how they protect you from infectious diseases in American Indian/Alaska Native communities.

Overview

Immunization us a powerful tool to protect ourselves, our families, and our communities.

Immunization is the process of building immunity to protect against infectious diseases. Immunity is built from receiving vaccines delivered through a shot, nasal spray, or orally. People, especially babies and youth (ages 0-16), receive immunizations on a schedule and based on their age. Most people will also receive yearly booster shots for illnesses like the flu and COVID-19.

Reasons to get immunized:

  • to keep you and your family and community healthy
  • to protect your community from disease
  • to stop the spread of disease to vulnerable groups like elders, babies, children, and people with existing health conditions
