Hannah Kelley (Sihásapa Lakóta)

Hannah Kelley is Sihásapa Lakóta and grew up in Portland, Oregon. She is a first-generation senior at Stanford University, majoring in Public Policy with a Health Policy concentration and Human Biology with a Community Health concentration. Additionally, Hannah is minoring in Linguistics and Translation. Growing up in Portland, Hannah had the opportunity to explore areas of medical research, public policy, community development, and social justice. At Stanford, Hannah served as the Co-President of the student-led organization, Habla, as well as Advocacy Committee Chair and English coach to Stanford custodial employees. Hannah also served on the leadership teams of Stanford Health Advocacy and Research in the Emergency Department (SHAR(ED)), Stanford Women in Politics (SWIP), and Students for Environmental and Racial Justice (SERJ). On campus, Hannah is also serving as an ASSU Executive Cabinet Member as a Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and Community Building; a member of the University Committee on Health and Safety; and Residential Assistant in Muwekma-Tah-Ruk: Stanford University’s Native American and Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander dorm.

Hannah is passionate about Indigenous health and wellness as well as addressing the social determinants of health through social, environmental, and racial justice driven approaches. Some of her research interests include protecting Native families against the impacts of climate change, the challenges and importance of police and government agencies tracking data on missing and murdered Indigenous women, data genocide of COVID-19 racial data and the impact on Native communities, traditional language revitalization and reclamation, historical trauma and Indigenized interventions, culturally relevant health communication, and environmental epidemiology.

In the future, Hannah hopes to pursue a career at the intersection of community health and environmental health and safety, possibly through higher education in public health and law. In her free time, Hannah enjoys learning to cook new dishes, baking, beading, music, playing the saxophone, kayaking, going on hikes, and spending time with family.
