Urban Inter-Tribal Center of Texas Mammography Day Event

March 22, 2010

This summer, the Urban Inter-Tribal Center of Texas (UITCT) held a successful Mammography Day event through a very recent partnership with the University of Texas Southwestern. The UITCT had attempted mammography days before, but problems with the mobile mammography van they had been using frequently caused delays and cancellations. However, when Susan G. Komen for the Cure funded a new digital mobile mammography unit to the UT Southwestern Medical Center, the UITCT and UT Southwestern joined together. Using the UT Southwestern’s digital mobile mammography unit, “The first day of the event was so successful … eventually more than ninety women benefited from the Mammography Day event! ”the UITCT was able to provide free mammograms to Native women and bring screening resources onsite to the clinic the community was familiar with. The extensive assistance provided by UT Southwestern undoubtedly helped make the event so successful. UT Southwestern created posters for the event, with tear-off contact cards for women to keep. Phone calls from women interested in the event were taken by representatives from UT Southwestern who arranged details and helped make the process effortless and trouble-free for the women involved. However, the event could not have been so successful without the ability of UITCT to sieze the great opportunity to work with UT Southwestern and hit the ground running. Between reminder calls from UT Southwestern and word of mouth around UITCT’s clinic, word of the event spread quickly. The first day of the event was so successful that additional days were planned and eventually more than ninety women benefited from the Mammography Day event! Even women working in the clinic, some of whom were just as anxious and nervous about mammograms as women in the community, were provided with the screening services at no charge. This fall, the UITCT put on a Passionately Pink Party- a fundraising event for breast health awareness. We look forward to hearing more about the successes of UITCT in the future! UIHO Spotlight Archives
