The Urban Indian Health Summit

The Summit was held on January 13, 2011 at the Capitol Visitors Center in Washington, D.C. In addition, pre- and post- summit meetings were held on January 12 and 14, 2011. More information from these important meetings and events are listed below.

Developed from the Urban Indian Heath Summit, the report Actualizing Health Care for Urban Indians: An Action Plan from the Urban Indian Health Summit, serves as a Call for Action that outlines strategies to ensure the success of health care reform for urban Indians. It is intended to prompt an ongoing discussion that is responsive to feedback from urban Indians, the organizations that serve them, urban Indian health professionals, practitioners and others. The Urban Indian Health Summit was hosted by the Seattle Indian Health Board’s Urban Indian Health Institute and sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Overview of Events:

January 12 – A pre-summit was held in partnership with the National Council of Urban Indian Health. This one day meeting worked to inform urban Indian health organizations on how the Affordable Care Act will affect the provision and financing of medical care.

January 13 – The all day summit on Capitol Hill brought together urban Indian health organizations, policy makers, federal partners, community advocacy groups, private foundations, researchers, and leaders in the field, to address issues tied to the success of health care reform.
