In 2011, the Seattle Indian Health Board’s Urban Indian Health Institute received funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Indian Health Services to implement the Viral Hepatitis and STI Prevention Project. Recognizing the need for integrated education and prevention efforts, the Viral Hepatitis and STI Prevention project provides free technical assistance to urban Indian health organizations (UIHO) nationwide to address these health issues, and develop culturally appropriate health promotion materials targeted at urban American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities. This project builds on over 10 years of past work at the UIHI to address viral hepatitis and provide training on integrating viral hepatitis screening and education services with other STI services in the UIHOs.

Read more about the Viral Hepatitis and STI Prevention Project in the UIHI’s June 2011 Project Brief or visit the new Viral Hepatitis and STI Prevention Project website to learn more about upcoming webinars, technical assistance and health promotion materials.

The Urban Indian Health Institute (UIHI) and the Office of Minority Health (OMH) are partnering on a new project aimed at increasing the delivery of quality care for urban AI/AN around cardiovascular disease (CVD), depression, and a third community-selected topic. In the upcoming months and years, the UIHI will be collaborating closely with urban Indian health organizations (UIHO) to identify best practice interventions, increase clinic capacity, and ultimately increase the number of successful models of care recognized at the national level.

We are currently in year one of this project and just completed surveying UIHO on their CVD and behavioral health services. You can find preliminary results of this survey and information about upcoming project activities here.

The Urban Indian Health Institute (UIHI) and the Fred Hutch Cancer Research Center (FHCRC) are partnering to conduct an investigation related to access to prostate cancer care for American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) men. This study will examine the feasibility of identifying men who have had an abnormal Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) test, then characterizing the patterns of care for those individuals. Our goal is to identify barriers to care for men who have not had adequate follow-up after an abnormal PSA test.

The UIHI has identified 6 partner health organization sites for recruitment of study participants. The participating sites are:

1. Seattle, WA
2. Portland, OR

Many of the health disparities analyses accomplished by Urban Indian Health Institute have focused on those areas that currently have services provided by a Title V-funded urban Indian health organization (UIHO). There are other cities in the country with significant American Indian/Alaska Native populations who do not have access to such services but who potentially could benefit from them. This project will identify some areas that potentially could sustain a new Indian Health Service-sponsored urban health organization, and additionally will assess some key social and health issues of American Indian/Alaska Natives in those areas.

Announcing New Viral Hepatitis Awareness Posters
The UIHI is pleased to announce the release of a viral hepatitis awareness poster series. Viral hepatitis is a serious public health issue that affects many urban American Indian and Alaska Natives (AI/AN) across the country. AI/AN have had one of the highest rates of viral hepatitis in the nation when compared with other racial and ethnic populations making it important that our agencies prioritize hepatitis education and prevention.

Since viral hepatitis is largely preventable through vaccination and education, it is essential that we make every attempt to inform our communities. The UIHI hopes that these posters will help increase awareness about hepatitis and stimulate greater discussion between patients and providers about prevention, vaccination, and treatment in order to curb the tide of this silent epidemic.

Posters have been mailed to all urban Indian health organizations. To download copies of the materials, use the following PDF links below. If you would like to request copies of the posters or would like additional information about viral hepatitis prevention, please contact info@uihi.org.

Viral hepatitis is a serious public health concern, but one that is largely preventable. The Urban Indian Health Institute has received grant funding from the Indian Health Service and the Centers for Disease Control to provide free training to urban Indian health organization staff on viral hepatitis and how to integrate prevention services into current organizational structure. The UIHI viral hepatitis prevention trainings include critical information about disease transmission and risk groups, recommendations for patient screenings and vaccination, exploring collaborations with other local community providers, as well as a discussion of harm reduction and risk assessment. Integrating viral hepatitis issues into an existing urban Indian health organization program builds routine procedures into existing infrastructure, thus reducing barriers to service, meeting client needs, and complimenting services that target the same population.
